Coexisting with Wildlife: An 8-Year-Old's App Revolution (2026)

Viyoohan Sayooran, an eight-year-old from Markham, Ontario, has developed an innovative app called Urban Wild Watch, which aims to promote coexistence between humans and wildlife. The app, created with the help of artificial intelligence, allows users to report wildlife encounters, including injured or orphaned animals, and provides essential safety information. This technology-driven approach addresses the growing concern of human-wildlife interactions, which can be dangerous for both parties.

The app's launch on June 5 has already registered over 158 wildlife encounters across Canada and the United States. It displays the general area and time of the sighting, ensuring the animal's location remains hidden for its safety. Viyoohan's initiative is a testament to the power of technology in fostering a harmonious relationship between humans and wildlife.

However, experts emphasize the importance of maintaining a respectful distance from wild animals. Colleen St. Clair, a professor of wildlife sciences, highlights the need to teach animals that humans are unpredictable and should be avoided. She advises against providing food or shelter to wild animals, as this can lead to dangerous encounters. Leonardo Cabrera, an ecologist, agrees, advocating for the 3 Rs: Respecting the environment, being Responsible for following rules, and Reporting animal behavior to local authorities.

The app's safety features, including emergency contact numbers, further enhance its utility. Viyoohan's achievement in creating Urban Wild Watch is commendable, but it also underscores the need for responsible reporting to wildlife authorities. By encouraging people to explore nature while respecting animals' space, we can ensure a safer and more sustainable coexistence.
